FERNANDEZ, Dr. Jose A. - 1929-2013
A popular pediatrician who devoted his entire career to caring for children in the Flint area, died peacefully at home in Grand Blanc surrounded by family and friends on May 16. Dr. Jose A. Fernandez cared for thousands of children in the 29 years he practiced here.
Visitation 1-3 and 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road.
Dr. Fernandez will be at the church from 10:30 a.m. and Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2013 at First Flint Seventh Day Adventist Church, G-4285 Beecher Road, Flint, Pastor Justin Ringstaff and Pastor David Salazar officiating.
Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery.
Gifts to honor the memory of Dr. Jose A. Fernandez may be made to the First Flint Seventh-day Adventist Church School and/or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
In his work and in his life, Dr. Fernandez acknowledged the counsel of his favorite Bible verse: “In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.” (Proverbs 3:6, The Living Bible). The doctor told parents of his young patients, “I give the medicine, but it’s God that makes the child well.”
Dr. Fernandez is survived by his wife, Maria Fernandez, of Grand Blanc, two sons and twin daughters and their spouses: Jose (Nicole) Fernandez of Alpharetta, Georgia, Dr. David (Liesbeth) Fernandez of Holly, Michigan, Dr.Miriam (Dr. Benedetto) Pellerito of Washington Township, Michigan and Mildred (Brian) Hickman of Fenton, Michigan, 10 grandchildren, one sister, and 14 nieces and nephews. One sister preceded him in death.
