CATES, James Wesley Jackson (Jim) - Of Flint, age 67, died after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s, Friday, September 23, 2011 at Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich.
Funeral service will be held 12noon Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, Pastor Timothy Speckman officiating. Burial in Flint Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Genesys Hospice Care Center or the Alzheimer’s Association. Visitation 5-8p.m. Sunday and 1-8p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
James was born in Flint, Michigan on October 4, 1943 to Jasper and Dorothy Cates. He worked at GM-V-8 Engine Plant for 35 years, in Skilled Trades, retiring in 1997. He was a proud GM worker. James served his country in the U.S. Army as a Medic during Vietnam. James was a member of the American Legion, VFW and UAW Local #659. He was an avid bowler and long time member of the American Bowling Congress. James was also a member of various bowling leagues. He was past secretary of the Chevy V-8 Engine Bowling league and various other leagues. James was a longtime Detroit sports fan, a University of Michigan fan and enjoyed watching Grand Blanc High School varsity football. He was a graduate of Beecher High School, Class of 1962 where he was an All Conference player in football, basketball and baseball. Special pride, above all else, were his grandchildren. On December 30, 1970, James married Kathryn J. Davis of Flint, Michigan. She preceded him in death on February 27, 2003. He then married Donna Anderson who preceded him in death in 2010. Surviving are son, James Cates and wife Christine, daughters, Amy and husband Paul Graverette and Chris and friend Pam and her children, Allen, Alex and Christina; grandchildren, James II, Andrew, Aliah, Kaya, Paulie II; brother, John and wife Kathy;
sister, Freddie; several nieces and nephews;
many good friends. Jim was predeceased by his first wife, Kathryn J. Cates, second wife, Donna, parents, Jasper and Dorothy Cates, brother Leroy Cates, father in law, John Davis (Papa), mother-in-law, Irene Davis (Ole' Ma), and grandmother, Nancy Ann Owl.
