WORKMAN, JANE “JEAN”
Loving mother and cherished grandmother, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025, at the age of 90.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Kruse; her granddaughter, Kate Kruse (husband Alex DeMare); her grandson, Rob “Robby” Kruse; and her beloved nieces and nephews in Scotland. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Workman; her four siblings, James, Alec, Smollett (“Letty”), and John; and her longtime companion, James Massar.
Jane was born on May 10, 1934, in Renton, Scotland. The youngest of five children of James Brown Gillies and Mary Jackson Gillies, Jane was a thoughtful, considerate, and dedicated child and sibling. She was raised in wartime Scotland and began working early at twelve while maintaining her school studies. She was incredibly proud of her father’s and brothers’ commitment to supporting war efforts. Her darling daughter, Mary MacQueen, was her pride and joy. Jane and Mary moved from Scotland to join her sister Letty in Flint, Michigan, in 1966; however, Jane sustained close and loving relationships with her siblings, nieces, and nephews who remained.
Jane was proud to be a United Auto Workers (UAW) member, working for Buick Motor Company for nearly 25 years before retiring. She married Harold Workman in 1972, who remained a loving husband until his death in 1986. Jane was a doting grandmother to her grandchildren, Kate and Rob. She was their biggest support and cheerleader, and she took incredible pride in their achievements. She was a devout member of her church, First Presbyterian, serving as a deacon for many years. Later in life, Jane found companionship in her adoring partner, James Massar, until his passing in 2012.
Jane was known for kind heart and quick wit, garnering her many treasured friends spanning generations. She was an incredibly generous and fierce advocate for others. Throughout her life, Jane’s community continued to grow because of her loving presence. She was active in many social groups, including a book club and knitting club, as well as a Pool Ladies’ Club in Kirkridge in the Hills. Her last loving community was Sunrise of Troy, where she touched many hearts in a small period of time.
Jane will be immeasurably missed and forever beloved. Though the way be long, let your heart be strong… until we meet again.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 am on Monday, February 24, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church, 746 South Saginaw Street, Flint. Reverend Dr. Joseph Novak will officiate. A visitation will be held immediately preceding the service from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.
