Mr. Douglas F. Kalis, age 70 of Unionville, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2016.

Doug was born October 12, 1945 in Buffalo, New York. He was adopted by Gottfried and Laura (Koslowski) Kalis and was raised in Detroit.

Doug was owner and operator of Unionville and Gagetown Funeral Chapels since 1995. He was a 1973 graduate of Wayne State University, Department of Mortuary Science. For several years Doug had been Executive Chef, Food Service Manager and Partner in Metzger’s German Restaurant in Ann Arbor. During that time he also worked as a funeral director with Muehlig Funeral Chapel. Doug has since enjoyed catering and organizing benefit dinners for the American Legion Post 421 of Unionville where he is a member. Doug served in the US Army during the Viet Nam Conflict. He was Unionville Village President from 1997-2003 and was a member of the Owendale Lions Club. He enjoyed his membership in the Saginaw Bay Yacht Club which allowed him to spend time on Saginaw Bay. His favorite past times were bowling, hunting, playing accordion with the Country Gospel Orchestra and woodworking.

Surviving are the love of his life, partner and caregiver, Katherine Hepfer and her son, Michael and his family; one son, Christopher D. Kalis and friend, Denise Fett of Lillington, N.C.; one daughter, Stephanie (Cory) Dunham of Dexter, MI; grandchildren, Cody (Marianna) Kalis of Lansing, Chelsea Kalis of N.C., Jayden, Brandt and Maiah Dunham of Dexter, Ashley Gaines of Flint; one sister, Gale (Steve) Parylak of Jackson; one sister –in-law, Donna Kalis of St. Clair Shores; several nieces, nephews and friends.

Doug was preceded in death by one brother, James Kalis.

Visitation will be at the Unionville Funeral Chapel on Monday, January 11 from 2:00-8:00 pm and Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Unionville from 11:00 am until the service at 1:00 pm.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, January 12 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Unionville. Rev. Steven Stolarczyk and Rev. Michael Allen will co-officiate. Burial will follow at Columbia Township Cemetery with military honors.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 421 of Unionville or United Hospice Service of Marlette.
