Sharlene Mae VanOstrom, age 80, left her earthly home, surrounded with the loving care of her family, for her forever home with her Lord and Savior on June 24, 2018, after a courageous three year battle with cancer. A celebration service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 2111 Flushing Rd, Flint, MI. Visitation will be prior to the service, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Shary was born on May 6, 1938 in Grand Rapids, MI to Robert and Velma (Hazlewood) Whitford. On August 9, 1957 she married her high school sweetheart, David Lee VanOstrom. They were blessed with four daughters.
Shary’s guiding passion throughout life was sharing the love of Jesus with everyone: first to her children, then to the hundreds of children she impacted as a Sunday School teacher. She also touched many lives by opening her home for bible studies for women, children and families. Through numerous mission trips at home and abroad, Shary was grateful for the opportunity to be the “hands of Jesus” to many in need.
Shary selflessly poured her life and love into the lives of her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all her faithful friends. Shary strove for excellence in all she did. She was a great cook, an excellent seamstress, an exceptional gardener and her picture perfect yard was a sanctuary for birds and animals of all kinds. Her home was a peaceful haven for all who visited. Photography became her favorite creative outlet as she captured her growing grandchildren, as well as her travels around the U.S. and the world with her husband, Dave. She enjoyed using those photos to show her love for family and friends by creating personalized, one-of-a-kind cards for every occasion, in addition to family calendars and beautiful photo albums. Her competitive spirit came alive at weekly family game nights which she enjoyed until she was no longer physically able. Shary loved to worship the Lord with the people of Calvary, as led by the worship band, never missing a Sunday. Shary's life was a shining example of Christ's light to everyone around her. What a beautiful difference one life can make!
Shary was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Velma Whitford. She is survived by her husband David VanOstrom of Flushing, MI; four daughters: Bonnie (Mike) Mariucci, Ruth (Kevin) Imhoff, Kathy (Jamie) Hresko, Kim (Mel) Thomas; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Kay) Whitford; sisters, Sandra (Mark) Pepper and Sue Richards; an uncle, several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Donations can be made to Calvary United Methodist Church for the Missions Fund or flowers may be sent to Reigle Funeral Home, 5501 W Pierson Rd, Flushing, MI 48433.
