Jasinski, Phyllis C. – of Flint, age 92, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family September 3, 2017, in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Phyllis’ family will receive visitors Wednesday, September 6, from 1-8 p.m. at Riegle Funeral Home, 5501 W. Pierson Rd, Flushing, MI, and a Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Her funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 7 at SS Charles & Helena Catholic Church, Clio, Michigan with a viewing at 10 a.m. Burial will be at New Calvary Cemetery, Flint, Michigan. Phyllis was born in Flint on December 11, 1924, daughter of the late Joseph and Sophie (Jagielski) Smigiel. A graduate of Flint Northern High School in 1942 and Hurley School of Nursing in 1955, she spent her life serving others. She married Leonard (“Goose”) Jasinski on November 26, 1955, and they had four children. After working at AC Spark Plug during World War II, Phyllis went on to nurse in various departments at Hurley Hospital over parts of two decades and served as a private duty nurse as well. She worked as a cook for a private catering firm (the Cumpata Crew) and then as a longtime cook and server – known as one of the cafeteria lunch ladies – at Luke M. Powers Catholic High School. She also faithfully served both St. Agnes Catholic Church and school and All Saints Catholic Church in any number of service roles. Besides being a Girl Scout leader and playground duty volunteer, Phyllis was a model for today’s “team mom,” as she took on that role for numerous band and sports teams. Phyllis provided a shining example of volunteerism for all by wearing a blue smock and giving 20 years of service as a volunteer auxiliary member at McLaren Hospital. She earned the 6,000-hour pin, served a variety of functions and included duties such as leading the radiology department volunteers and assisting with the volunteer newsletter. Beloved by health care patients and providers alike, “Feisty” Phyllis, as she was known, was a magnificent example of care and healing, love and compassion. Serving others and being active was what she did as the Jasinski kids and friends descended upon the family home in north Flint. The home was filled with food served with love – with dishes always having a defining taste and sweet smells. Let us not forget the ways she uplifted her kids and their friends, Goose’s friends and his projects and so many, many people in their time of need. She did that through being an all-day and night coffee drinker and smoker! Phyllis was an athlete in her time – a softball player, bowler and ice skater – and she never shied away from playing catch or mixing it up with the neighborhood kids. Dancing brought out the best in her as she lit up crowds and the dance floor on many occasions. She loved marching bands, musicals, classical music and music of all kinds, old movies, classic TV shows and beating everyone in cards despite acting like she was unsure of the hands being dealt. Phyllis’s love and command of trivia was nurtured through being a voracious reader and puzzle player. Toughness and grit and are nice terms to describe her overcoming health obstacles and other challenges while retaining her characteristic wit and humor. Married to Goose (deceased) for 59 years, surviving are Mary Ellen (Tom Fox with Nicholas and Maria, Michael, Katie and Ian), Rosemary (Leigh Godbey), Ken (Sandy with Jennifer and Jacob) and John (Denise with Matt, Joe, Leah and Lucas). She loved her 10 grandchildren and the family cherishes memories of Grandma smiling and spending special time with each. The Smigiel family of the old Flint north end are her heritage – she was preceded in death by her parents along with sisters Mary, Stella, Annie, Helen and Hattie, and brothers Louie, Oscar and Eddie. She is survived by many nieces and nephews – several of whom are like sisters and brothers to her. Phyllis’s faith was her compass, and honesty and simply being nice to others were her calling cards. The family is pleased to share a favorite quote of hers from Mary McLeod Bethune: “I leave you love. I leave you hope. I leave you the challenge of developing confidence in one another. I leave you a thirst for education. I leave you a respect for the use of power. I leave you faith. I leave you racial dignity. I leave you a desire to live harmoniously with your fellow man. I leave you, finally, a responsibility to our young people.” The family wishes to thank all caregivers. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Luke M. Powers Catholic High School (c/o Powers Catholic High School Advancement Office, 1505 W Court Street, Flint, MI 48503 or online at http://www.powerscatholic.org/give-now.html); Northwest Missouri State University’s Bearcat Marching Band for new uniforms (c/o Office of University Advancement, 800 University Dr., Maryville, MO 64468 or online at https://www.nwmissouri.edu/alumni/giving/onlinegiving.htm); and/or McLaren Auxiliary (c/o McLaren Foundation, 401 South Ballenger Highway, Flint, MI 48532 or online at https://www.mclaren.org/flint/foundation-donation-form.aspx).
