Don was born in Stonefort, Illinois, on April 22, 1935, the son of the late Neuman and Ruby (Nicholson) Russell. A proud U.S. Army veteran, he dedicated much of his life to serving others. Don married Ruth Margaret Mossner on October 1, 1965, and she preceded him in death on May 30, 2008. Don’s legacy is one of kindness and leadership. As a girls' and women's softball coach, he inspired many young women, instilling values far beyond sport. He was also a valued member of the National Cambridge Glass Collectors Club and had a deep love for animals. Before becoming the principal of the Genesee Intermediate School District's Severely Mentally Impaired Program, he taught children vital life skills, helping to shape their futures. He created the school’s motto, “Slowly but Surely,” and designed the purple and white turtle mascot, reflecting his patient and thoughtful approach to life. Don enjoyed teaching others about finance and was an avid motorcycle rider. He cherished traveling with his family to Florida, visiting relatives across the U.S., and exploring overseas destinations in Europe and Australia. His life was rich with experiences and his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Don is survived by: his loving children, Hedi (Brent Berry) Russell-Berry and Cari (John) Gibbons; grand-cats, Sampson, Periwinkle, Angelo and Annabelle; and many other loving family members and friends.
