ETTINGER, George Taylor, II: Died Thursday, August 23, 2012, at Grayling Mercy Hospital after collapsing while doing his lifelong love, bicycling.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Craig Hayden officiating.
Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan or Genesee Wanderers.
Visitation 12-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Ettinger was born in Fountain Hill, Pennsylvania on March 27, 1945, to Amos Aschbach Ettinger and Kathryn (Gable) Ettinger. A 1963 graduate of Fenton High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force with 3 years at K.I. Sawyer AFB in Marquette, Michigan, as a fighter jet mechanic.
Employed from 1976 to 2004 at Grand Blanc Metal Fab, he would routinely donate blood at work and was proud of his 10 gallon blood donor pin. An avid cyclist, he did frequent “century” rides of 100 miles, 24 tours from Lansing to Mackinac on DALMAC starting in 1973, was a life member of the League of American Wheelmen, and was a co-founder of the Genesee Wanderers Cycling Club. Beyond cycling, he was a chess-playing man of logic, reason and perfectionism and a decades-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He was a man of boundless ironic humor and bad puns, fond of compensating for good service and random quiz answers with uncommon forms of US currency.
Surviving are wife, Penny Meharg, whom he married on November 21, 1985, and his former wife Kathryn (Ruona) Smith, mother of four of his children.
