BARKER, Richard Calvin - Of Burton, age 66, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at his residence with his loving wife by his side.
Funeral service will be held 11am Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint,
Majors Richard and Brenda Rhoads-Herivel and Reverend Jason Crum co-officiating.
Burial in Evergreen Cemetery with a military graveside service under the auspices of VFW Post 822 Honor Guard.
Visitation 2-8pm Friday and 10am Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the East Flint Church of the Nazarene Missions and Softball Outreach.
Rick was born in Flint and graduated from Davison High School in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army from 1970-1972 and was stationed in Germany. He graduated from Baker Business University with an Associate’s Degree in Accounting in 1973.
Rick married his childhood sweetheart, Bethany Rhoads, on January 29, 1971. He worked for Genesee Cement and Grand Blanc Cement for over 30 years until his retirement on December 23, 2015.
Rick was a lifelong member of the Church of the Nazarene, first at South Flint Church of the Nazarene for over 40 years. He most recently worshipped and served at the East Flint Church of the Nazarene for the last 20 years.
Rick was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed coaching chess, softball and his boys’ basketball teams in the Kearsley School District, where he was also involved with the band boosters. He loved being the keeper of the stats for the football team and continued doing it even after his children had graduated. He loved to play golf with family and friends. Later, he became his grandchildren’s #1 fan as they played various sports. He is known for his obsession of The University of Michigan, with his detailed car and his U of M man cave.
Rick leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Bethany (Rhoads), son, Scott (Allison Hicks), of Portland, Oregon; daughter, Christie and fiance Sean Enders, of Phoenix, Arizona; daughter-in-law, Melanie LaDuke of Grand Blanc; his dearly loved grandchildren, Andrew, Geoffrey, Hannah, Ethan, Chase and Landon Barker; 3 step-grandchildren, Regan, Lennon and Ryder LaDuke; sisters, Susan (Mark) McKone of College Grove, Tennessee and Marilyn Barker of Manistee, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kyle Richard Barker; his parents, Richard “Dick” and Naomi (Fritzler) Barker; infant sister; and father and mother-in-law, Norman and Viola (Weaver) Rhoads.
