Helen was born on September 13, 1925, with identical twin sister, Catherine Hodges (who preceded her in death), in Akron, OH. The family moved to Lennon, MI. Helen graduated from Owosso High School in 1944. She and her twin then moved to Washington, D.C. to work at the Pentagon from 1944 through 1946. Helen married Stanley J. Horky on November 29, 1949, and stayed at home to raise her children. She returned to work, working first at the City of Flint Treasurer’s Office, and then culminating her employment at the Social Work Department at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI, where she retired after 20 years of dedicated service. She was so well-loved and well-known that even the hospital’s CEO attended her retirement tea. Helen also actively participated/volunteered throughout the years as a homeroom mother at Lewis Elementary School, where her children attended, contributed numerous hours volunteering at the following organizations: Parent-Teacher Association of Flint, MI, Cub Scouts of America (Cub Scout Leader), United Way of Genesee & Lapeer Counties, American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, and the Genesee County Democratic Party. Helen was the proud mother of five children, 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition, numerous neighborhood children from the Arizona Avenue area, to whom she provided food, kindness, a listening ear, a warm heart and a warm place to stay in time of need, will always consider her “Mom Horky”. Helen was also an excellent cook and baker, teaching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren wonderful recipes to hand down from generation to generation, especially the Annual “Apple Strudel Weekend”, where all participated, no matter how small. We will all miss her warm smile, kind heart, and hugs. Helen was also an avid shuffleboard player, loved dancing and especially singing.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Stanley; her parents, Emerick and Rosalia Gasparovic; her twin sister, Catherine Hodges; sister, Mary Gasparovic, who died in childhood; brothers, Emerick, Joseph, Stephen, Anthony and Michael Gasparovic; father and mother-in-law, Frank and Antonia Horky. Surviving children are Susan (Tim) Eldon of Carmel, IN, Stan (Cindy) Horky of Oxford, MI, Richard Horky (and partner Lucille Woodard) of Flint, MI, Reginald Horky (and partner Carla Carrado) of Scottsdale, AZ, and Patricia (Mark) Scott of Flint, MI. Bond, Karim Eldon, Elisa (Dwayne) Noaker, Reginald Horky II, Kimberly Lutze, Stan (Jaime) Harper, Phillip Horky, Andrea (Justin) Timm, Caitlan Scott, Richard Horky, and Frank (Dana) Horky. Also surviving is long-time special friend to Helen and family members, Gerald Carlson; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Helen had a beautiful soul and everyone that met her, loved her. She will be sorely missed by all the lives she has touched throughout the years. The family would like to especially thank the “angels” from St. Vincent Hospice of Indianapolis, IN who so lovingly cared for Helen during her illness, especially Sister Cathy Robinson, R.N., Kathy Spears, R.N., Worth Hartman, Chaplain, Carol Stout, Social Worker, Dr. Emily Giesel, volunteer Dottie Davis, and assistants Ashian Hicks and Fonda Robinson, both of whom had a gentle, magical touch to calm her. Also a special thanks to Barbara Greer, CNA; Senior Home Companion; and SarahCare of Indianapolis, all of whom provided wonderful care for Helen.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on Helen’s behalf to the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Vincent Hospice of Indianapolis, IN.
