KIENITZ, Frederick “Fritz” Herbert- Of Fenton Michigan, died peacefully in his home on September 5th.

Fred was born on July 10th, 1931 in Flint, Michigan, the son of Frederick August Kienitz and Anne Mildred (Hillman) Kienitz. He was raised in Grand Blanc, Michigan where he attended primary school, and later went to Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw. After graduation, Fred worked several consecutive jobs including at James Lumber, Buick, Chevrolet, and Smith Quality Homes, during which time a professor, for whom he was building a home, had seen Fred's potential and encouraged him to further his education.
Fred attended college at Mott Community College, Earned a bachelor’s degree in education from The University of Michigan-Flint, and attended graduate school at The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor where he earned a Master's degree in educational administration.
Upon graduation, Fred worked as a teacher and then principal for Carman/Ainsworth Community schools, serving as an administrator at several elementary schools for 26 years.

Fred married Joan Dagner on February 3rd, 1962. They raised their 3 children in Swartz Creek, Michigan and moved to Fenton, Michigan after retirement. Fred had loved singing since age 3, which led to his joining a quartet while at Seminary. At 18, he joined the Barbershop Society, where he remained a member for 65 years. He sang in the Flint Arrowhead chorus, several popular quartets, and served as a director, sought-after quartet coach and chorus president, among many other positions. His distinction and enduring membership was recognized in 1998 by his induction in to the Barbershop Society's Pioneer District Hall of Fame.

Beyond his great love for singing, Fred loved traveling, cooking and fishing, hobbies which he loved because he could share them with his family.

Fred was a member of the Fenton Moose Lodge and Southeast Genesee County Chapter of Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. He was a devout Lutheran, attending Grace Lutheran Church where he served in many capacities.

Fred leaves to celebrate his memory, wife, Joan (Dagner) Kienitz, 3 children, Jill Kienitz, Daniel Kienitz (Abba), Kathryn Cintron (Miguel); 3 grandchildren, Jenavieve, Hannah and Jameson, and 3 step-grandchildren, a great- grand daughter, and several nieces and nephews. He brought great joy to countless people with a sharp sense of humor and a belief in serving others.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations to be made in Fred's name to the following organizations The Univeristy of Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Harmony Foundation of The Barbershop Harmony Society, or Young Singers Foundation of Sweet Adeline’s Incorporated.

Special thank you to Stonegate Center of Lapeer, the Medical Team Hospice and Comfort Keepers for all their care and support.

Funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Grace Lutheran Church, 2526 Corunna Road, Flint, Pastor Sam Hacker officiating.

Private burial at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road.

Mr. Kienitz will be at the church from 3 p.m. Tuesday until the time of the service.
