Joyce M. Swanson, age 87, of Flushing, formerly of Fayette, Michigan, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2018 at her home in Flushing, Michigan surrounded by her loving family.
She was born June 26, 1930 in Fayette, Michigan the daughter of Herbert C. and Margaret J. (Watchorn) Pizzala and was a graduate of the Cooks High School in Cooks, MI. On June 23, 1951 the former Joyce M. Pizzala married Eugene A. Swanson in Fayette. They made their home in Fayette and thereafter moved to Flint where they raised their family. They have lived in both Flushing and Fayette for the past several years. Eugene preceded her in death on September 7, 2004.
Affectionately known as “Sugar”, Joyce was employed as a cook with the Beecher School System in Flint, retiring from there.
She was a member of the Flushing United Methodist Church. She enjoyed volunteering at the Genesys Regional Medical Center gift shop and was an avid Detroit Tiger and Detroit Piston sports fan. She also enjoyed following her children and grandchildren in their extra-curricular activities. She loved to talk on the telephone with family and friends.
Joyce is survived by her daughters, Cheryl (Rod) Jones of Flushing, Susan Abdella of Flushing, Linda (Kirk) Walters of Flushing, and Tracy (David) Sanborn of Grand Blanc, MI; son, Brian (Catherine) Swanson of Traverse City; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sister, Joanne LaBute of Garden; brothers, Darrel (Mary Fay) Pizzala of Garden and Virgil (Nadine) Pizzala of Burton; along with nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Swanson; and her brothers, Melvin, Donald, and James Pizzala.
Visitation will be held from 12:00-4:00 pm, Saturday, January 20, 2017 at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Garden, Michigan. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 pm, at the funeral home, with Pastor Lew Pizzala officiating. Burial will be held in the New Garden Cemetery at Garden Township.
