KELTS, Joel Thomas – of Flint, MI, age 53, passed away at his home on Sunday, December 24, 2017. A Funeral Liturgy, with Military Honors, will be held 11 AM Friday, December 29, 2017 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, Davison, MI 48423; Rev. Fr. Andrew A. Czajkowski officiating. Cremation will take place following the service. The family will receive visitors 6-8 PM Thursday, December 28, 2017 and 10-11 AM Friday, December 29, 2017 at Allen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in Joel’s memory.
Joel was born in Lapeer, MI on January 3, 1964, son of Atwood and Joan (Fortune) Kelts. He was raised in Davison, Michigan until 1981 when he enlisted in the United States Army. Joel received his GED while in the military. He worked as an artillery repairman while stationed in Colorado Springs and in Schweinfurt Germany. Joel returned home in September 1987 and then married and moved to Lawrenceville, Georgia where he began a career as a residential electrician. In April 1991, Joel and his wife had their only child, Jacob Joel Kelts. After several years away, Joel moved back to Michigan in 2003. After working odd jobs until 2007, Joel enrolled in truck driving school at Baker College. He drove truck over the road from 2009 until 2014 when he had to quit driving due to his health. Joel was a simple man. He loved his family and would do anything for any of them. Joel was not materialistic, as long as he had a place to put his head at night, he was happy and content. He was passionate about world affairs and the government. Joel enjoyed sitting around a bonfire, listening to music with family and friends.
Joel is survived by his son, Jacob Joel Kelts; parents, Atwood and Joan (Fortune) Kelts; 12 siblings and their spouses/life partners; 17 nieces and nephews and their spouses/life partners; 25 great-nieces and great-nephews; his best friend, Chewy; many other loving family members and friends. Joel was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Norman Kelts on April 9, 1976.
