HOWARD, Clayton H. – of Clio, age 86, passed away peacefully with family by his side Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Bavarian Comfort Care in Bridgeport. Funeral services will be held at 10AM Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Messiah Lutheran Church. 520 Butler St., in Clio. Pastor Erik Cloeter officiating. Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery – Holly, with full military honors. Family will receive visitors at the church on Monday from 4PM until 8PM and Tuesday from 9AM until the time of service at 10AM. Contributions may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church Samaritan Fund.
Clayton was born on April 4, 1930 on the family farm in Meade Twp., Michigan to the late Burt and Edith (Maynard) Howard. He grew up with his 5 sisters and 5 brothers. Mr. Howard proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 until 1954. He married Joan Scherping on June 25, 1955 in Saginaw, Michigan. Clayton retired from Buick in 1987 with 37 years’ seniority and was a member of the UAW Local #599. He and his wife were charter members of Messiah Lutheran Church. Clayton enjoyed many sports, especially baseball and played on several teams, one being his navy ships team that played in many ports of call in the Mediterranean. He also enjoyed dancing.
Clayton will lovingly be remembered by his: Wife of 61 years, Joan Howard; Son, Mark (Diane); Daughters: Carol (Bill), Vicky (Allen), Kelly (Jeff); 6 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; Many siblings, nieces, nephews, and many other loving family members and friends. The family extends a special thank you to Bavarian Comfort Care in Bridgeport and Bay Area Hospice for all the love and care Clayton received during his final days.
