Bonita was born January 25, 1926, to the late Alford and Clara McGinthy, in Tipperary, Arkansas. After living her early years in the Rector area, the family moved to Modesto, California, where she met her dear friend, Mary Adkins. The two have remained constant and true friends to this day. After her mother became ill and passed away, the family moved back to Arkansas where she maintained the family home and cared for her five younger brothers and sisters.
After World War II ended, she met the love of her life, the late Martin Spencer Parsons and they were married January 23, 1947. They moved to Michigan, first to Muskegon, and then, in 1955, to the Flint area. Bonita worked at Robert Hall Dept Store for a short time and as an elementary school secretary in the Bendle District. However, she never forgot that her true enjoyment was maintaining a loving home for her family. At least once a year, her brothers and sisters and their families gathered at the little 3-bedroom home on Gram St., or at the cabin up north, where the main themes were breakfast, lunch, and dinner. One year, we had 33 family members spend the night at the cabin and dinner the next day was served to 50+ people. Bonita (Sis) and her sisters would cook up many mouth-watering dishes to the delight of everyone there. They also loved spending time with their dear friends Lucille and Bud Smith, Joyce and Lilburn Tranbarger, Nadine and Denver Beckley, and Liz and Pete Alumbaugh.
Survived by, children: Georgia and (Francis) Bland and family, Jerry Parsons and family, Marty and (Sandy) Parsons and family; grandchildren: Terry of Swartz Creek, Laura of Cincinnati, and Niki of Cincinnati; sister, Sarah Parks of St. Petersburg FL, brothers, Archie McGinthy of Falls Church VA, and Tom and (Ruth) McGinthy of Lebanon IL; brother-in-law, Milton Slavik of Victoria TX; several nieces, nephews and great grand-children including Ava and Grace Parsons. Preceded in death are her, brother, Al (Jr.) McGinthy and, sisters, Fleta Slavik and Julia (Cleo) Wheaton.
The family would like to extend heart-felt thanks to our sisters-in-love Sandy Parsons and Lynn Boyd. A special thank you to Sandy who opened her home to Bonita (Granny) and provided the care and love she deserved at the end of her life. Also, thank you to Lynn & Barry Boyd and their daughter, Nicki (Granny’s adopted granddaughter). Lynn visited “Granny” at least once a week, every week, while Granny lived at Abbey Park and Brookdale Assisted Living.
Finally, thank you to the Medical Team Hospice group that gives such caring attention and love to those transitioning through the end of life, especially Micah, Claudia, and Jennifer.
Contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Fund or American Ex-Prisoners of War.
