Gerald Lee Smades, age 83, of Mt. Pleasant formerly of the Bridgeport/Frankenmuth area, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Woodland Hospice House in Mt. Pleasant. Gerald was born on December 24, 1927 in Pontiac, MI, the son of Clifford and Evelyn Osgood Smades.
Graveside Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, June 25, at 1:00 pm at Chippewa Township Cemetery, Isabella County, Michigan. Military Honors will be conducted by VFW Post 3033 and American Legion Post 110 of Mt. Pleasant. Memorial contributions are suggested to the family. Envelopes are available at the Rowley Funeral Home, 330 S. University Ave., Mt. Pleasant, Michigan 48858, phone 989-772-1529.
Gerald was a truck driver and formerly an autoworker in Flint. He also managed the Zepher Gas Station in Traverse City. Gerald enjoyed dancing, music, and casino tours. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII.
Gerald is survived by two children and their spouses, Ron and Linda Smades of Mt. Pleasant and JoAnn and Albert Bucco of Traverse City; 12 grandchildren; and three sisters, Marion Regentin, Pat Vespie, and Linda, all of Clarkston. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Clifford, Jr.; a sister Peggy Vespie; a granddaughter, Shannon; and a daughter, Ethel Mae Kellum.
