SMITH, Gerald Wayne - Age 78, died Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Saturday January 14 at Sharp Funeral Homes Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd. Visitation will take place from 12 PM until the time of service at the funeral home. Those desiring may make contributions to the Boy Scouts of America.
Gerald was born in Flint, Michigan to Harold and Mary Smith on May 22, 1938. He was the youngest of six children and resided here all his life. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and served there until its closing. He then attended Christ the King Church and New Creation Church. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 117 for over 50 years. Mr. Smith was the oldest scout to earn Eagle rank "in the nation" at the age of 72 in 2010. He was honored by Channel 12 news as "Person of the Week" for that accomplishment and a live interview was followed up by a picture and write-up in the Flint Journal. Gerald also volunteered at Easter Seals and he liked helping others. He earned his G.E.D. from Southwestern in 1986 at 48 years of age. Earlier in life Gerald trained to be a custodian/janitor at Community Industries. He worked part-time at Kessel's until they closed. Gerald loved all scouting activities, especially camping at Tapico and Holaka and belonging to the Order of the Arrows. His other favorite things were country music, dancing, Tiger baseball, riding his moped, bowling, and anything about cars. He bowled on a league called "The Terminator's" and proudly displayed his trophies and shared his scores. He lived with his parents until their passing and was then cared for by his siblings. He lived several years at Rosehaven Assisted Living and enjoyed the company and help of other residents and staff as he was very social. Gerald needed more specialized care due to Alzheimer's and moved into the memory care facilities- the last being Living Joy.
Gerald is survived by his sister, Carol Smith. The rest of Gerald's immediate family are deceased; sisters, Dolores Piper, Claribel Rak, Brenda Becker, and brother, Carl Bernard Smith. He has many nieces and nephews who faithfully kept him in their thoughts and prayers over the years and visited him when possible.
Gerald will be missed especially for his capacity to overcome his personal struggles and for enjoying his life as God planned it for him.
Many thanks to everyone who befriended and/or helped him along the way!
