Age 96, of Grand Blanc, MI, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. Honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private burial for Betty and her late husband of 69 years, Darrell “Sam” Spaid, will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery. He preceded her in death on September 30, 2014.
Betty was born in LaPorte, Indiana, on April 2, 1922, the daughter of Norman and Lauretta (Heusi) Kasbaum. After graduating from LaPorte High School in 1939, she completed her nursing degree from Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago in 1943. Upon graduation she worked at Fairview Hospital in LaPorte until her marriage to the love of her life, Darrell, December 27, 1944, while he was home on leave from the Army Air Corp.
They made their home and raised their family in South Bend, IN, where Betty continued her nursing career. In 1969 they relocated to Owosso, MI, and she helped Sam open a Burger Chef franchise. Upon the death of her father in 1972, Betty continued her loving role as a caregiver when she and Sam welcomed her mother and disabled brother, Jack, into their home for the next 17 years.
Retiring in 1989, Betty and Sam enjoyed many years at West Twin Lake in St. Helen, MI, and later resided in Flushing. In 2010 they moved to Abbey Park Independent Senior Living.
Betty’s interests included bowling, swimming, camping, playing cards and bingo. In retirement years she loved RV travels and wintering in Texas. As an avid reader, she daily read the newspaper from cover to cover. She became a big TV fan of the Detroit Tigers, Pistons, and Lions, along with many college teams. She loved spending time with her family, including lively games of cards, still proving to be a great competitor. Betty can be remembered for a life of compassion, friendship, being humble, and putting others before herself.
Surviving are her three children, Doug (Cindy) Spaid of Havelock, NC, Norma Tomasoski of Flushing, MI, and Peggy (Keith) Brock of Indio, CA; eight grandchildren, Shawn Spaid, Lisa (Ernie) Estrada, Ryan (Jenn) Brock, Tara Tomasoski, Laura Brock, Ashley (Woody) Allen, Leslie Brock, Zach Tomasoski; nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Harold (Gail) Spaid of Huntington Beach, CA; two nieces; loving furry companion, Bella. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Jack; son-in-law Paul Tomasoski; great-grandson Dylan Spaid; nephew Mike Spaid.
Betty’s family wishes to express their sincere thanks to everyone at Abbey Park who befriended and cared for their dear mother.
