RUTHERFORD, Frank R. - Of Mt. Morris, age 94, died Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at his residence.
Funeral service will be held 1pm Monday, March 16, 2015 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint,
Reverend James F. Offrink officiating.
Burial in Flint Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family.
Visitation 1-8pm Sunday and 11am Monday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Frank was born in Flint on February 18, 1921, the son of Harry E. and Isabelle Leake Rutherford. Frank served in the U.S. army during World War II in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany as an Allied Liaison Service with the First French Army Corp. Frank was employed by Buick Motor Company from 1940-48. He joined the Flint Police Department in December of 1948. He was then promoted to Detective in 1954 and the Detective Sergeant in 1964. Frank implemented the Police School Liaison Program, Bryant School in 1958; Junior Police Program, Pierson School in 1962; Flint Police School Cadet Program in 1967; High School Cadet Program in 1967; Institute for Police School Liaison Officers with the Flint Community Schools in 1967; Youth Services Section, Flint Police Department in 1967; Police-Community Service Officer Program, Police School Community Service Building at Clark School. Frank retired from the Flint Police Department in 1973. He was employed with the Flint Community Schools in 1974 and implemented Police-School related programs at Flint Community Schools in 1974 at Clark School. Frank also assisted in National Implementation of Police-School-Liaison Programs.
Even though Frank had many awards, his greatest awards were his wife, sons, daughter and grandchildren, who he loved and cherished dearly. We will miss him every day! The Houghton Lake Cottage was his favorite place to go in the summer with his family.
Surviving are wife, Betty Lou;
children, Bill Swain, Tim, Frank, Shawn Kenny and Rodger, Tom (Kim) and Randy (Linda);
13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren;
and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Harry Douglas, brothers, Jim and Elwood, grandson, Jason.
The family extends a thank you to Gentiva Hospice, especially Mary Cassady.
