George was born in Elkhart, Indiana, on April 22, 1922, the son of Gennaro and Carmela (Bibbo) Petriella and was the third oldest of nine children. He proudly served his country as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific where he was a Chief Petty Officer. George was a blacksmith apprentice on the New York Central Railroad. He married Palma Maria “Sanita” Cifelli on October 22, 1949. They moved to Flint in 1954 and George began working as a welder for General Motors. George was a lifelong member of the American Welding Society. He and Sanita moved to Flushing with their son, James, in 1959. In addition to working for GM, he designed and built two houses for his family in Flushing.
George was self-taught in electronics, creating his own “disco lights” that his grandchildren enjoyed while dancing when they were young. When personal computers were in their infancy, George taught himself how to build PC's, then taught his grandson. He also played the organ and the accordion.
George is survived by his wife, Sanita; son, James and wife Kathleen; granddaughter, Meridith; grandson, Matthew; sisters, Rose, Edith, Frances; sister-in-law, Sigrid; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Anthony and Joseph; sisters, Mary, Theresa, and Jane. |
