Gary Anderson

Born: 8/22/1941
Died: 7/4/2013
Age: 71
Community: Flushing, MI

ANDERSON, Gary - Of Flushing, age 71, left his physical body and returned to his Source on Thursday, July 4, 2013. His sacred transition took place at Gentiva Hospice with his wife and two daughters at his side. Gary had three weeks of intense illness that he endured bravely and with humor, all the while thanking any and every one for their part in his care giving.

Gary’s life began on August 22, 1941. He and his identical twin brother, Stanley (deceased) were born to Leland and Laura (Bridges) Anderson, in Flint, Michigan. He married Sharon (Sherri) Swanson in 1964 and they had two daughters, Edie Anderson, of New York City and Aimee Anderson, of Atlanta, Georgia. His life was centered on his family of “girls” and he took great pride and pleasure in all this involved. He was actively involved in their life experiences regardless of the distance between, and especially enjoyed making use of Face Time and daily phone calls.

Gary and Sharon traveled frequently to New York, Atlanta and Nashville for family time. He was affectionately known as “Big Earl” by his daughters and their friends. He enjoyed his Elvis music collection that spanned 8 track tapes, CDs and his coveted IPod. He loved going to the movies and was a Net Flix junkie. Those close to Gary knew of his special kitty “Girlie” and what she meant to him.

Gary graduated from Beecher High School in 1960 where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball and was proud of being voted to the All-Conference Team in his senior year. After graduation he went to work for General Motors and was appreciative of the opportunity to make a “good living” for his family. He retired after 35 years of service which included ten years as Local Union President for the former UPGWA and five years as a Regional Director at the International level. Following this retirement he fueled his love of tools by becoming a vendor for companies that serviced various hardware stores and Home Depot stores. He subsequently was a vendor in nine Meijer stores garden departments and worked until he was hospitalized.

It was Gary’s expressed wishes that there be no formal memorial service and his family has honored his request. It is their belief that any thought or memory held by anyone, anywhere, will constitute a memorial service to Gary, more personal in nature and on a greater scale than one held on a specific date and time.
Memories are a living tribute to the one that has already gone forward.

In addition to his wife and daughters, Gary leaves behind a brother, Richard Anderson, brother-in-law, Greg Swanson, special nephew, Chris Thorsby and Chris’ family, and several more nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Ramona Kirkpatrick and Dorothy Thorsby and brothers, Charles and Stanley.
