Whether baking her traditional bread (paska) and pastries, making pyrohy, creating pysanky ( Easter eggs) or sewing costumes, Irena was always lending a hand to ensure that Ukrainian traditions were preserved and handed down to the next generation. She lived her life with a strong faith in God and a spirit of selfless service.
Irena is survived by her three daughters, Olga Swarthout, Mary (Michael) Martin, Daria (Christopher) Godfrey; grandchildren, Melissa (Kevin) Carter, Nicholas (Savannah) Martin; Lesya, Katie, Mary Grace, John and Michael Godfrey; Tess (Bob) Cassady; great-grandchildren, Chloe Grace and Sophie Belle Carter and Madison Jane Martin; numerous relatives in Poland, Ukraine and the United States. She was also preceded in death by her seven sisters and a son-in-law, Bill Swarthout.
