STEIN, Zane H. – Of Flint Township, former Superintendent of Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools, age 86, passed away Saturday, January 27, 2018, after over 20 years with Parkinson’s related disease.
Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road.
Visitation 11 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Inurnment of cremains will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Michael J. Fox for Parkinson’s research or the Zane H. Stein Scholarship Fund.
Zane was born on October 30, 1931, to Ed and Inez Stein in
St. Paul Minnesota. He was raised in Minnesota, graduated in 1950 from St. Cloud Tech High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for four years.
Following his Honorable Discharge from the Air Force, Zane began the path to his career in public education. He completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at St. Cloud State University and did his Doctoral studies at the University of Michigan.
His first teaching position was in Monroe, Michigan, where he later became Director of Vocational Education in 1966.
The family moved north to Petoskey, where Zane was Director of Vocational Education for the Charlevoix-Emmet ISD. Zane came to Carman-Ainsworth in 1969, becoming Superintendent in 1974 through his retirement in 1991.
During his tenure, Zane was active in various civic groups and state educational organizations, becoming President of Michigan Association of School Administrators in 1986.
He will be remembered for his dedication to public education.
Following retirement, Zane worked with Tomlinson-Harburn Architectural Firm as a school design and construction consultant.
In 2000 Zane decided he wanted to be a donor of his brain to the U of M Brain Bank, a research program to determine what causes Parkinson’s and other diseases of the brain. His wishes were fulfilled following his passing.
Zane’s family would like to express profound gratitude to the staff at Caretel Inns of Linden for their loving care and support for the last six years.
In 1952 Zane married Patricia (Pat) Stark in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
They have three children, Janis (David) Kauzlarich, David (Kristine) Stein and Tim (Kelly) Stein;
grandchildren, Karri (Matt) Forrest, Joe (Danielle) Kauzlarich, Brian (Shannon) Kauzlarich, Timothy (Tesla) Stein and Samantha (Alex) Rose;
great-grandchildren, Phillip, Emma, Ekko, Griffin, Harlowe, Tanner, Makayla, Landon and Zane.
