John A. Schluckebier
Frankenmuth, MI

Frankenmuth farmer John Schluckebier passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on May 1, 2024, at his lifelong home on King Road. He was 93.
John was born June 17, 1930, in Frankenmuth, Mich., to the late Arthur and Alma Schluckebier. From childhood, he learned to farm the land owned by his parents and passed down from his great-grandparents. In August 1954, John married his love, Betty Blackmore. The couple made their home on the same land where John was born and worked together to raise milking cows, grow sugar beets, wheat and other cash crops that would be used in food products nationwide. John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, then the couple was blessed with a son, Johnny, and daughters Sherri and Lisa, and later on three grandsons Noah, Michael and Trevor.
In every possible way, John represented Frankenmuth. A man of strong faith, he was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Richville, where he served as an Elder, Chairman of the Board and a Finance Board Member.
As a lifelong farmer, John gave of his time to further his industry. He was secretary and treasurer of Animal Breeders Co-op and served on: the Tuscola County Certified Seed Growers board, the Saginaw County Farm Service Agency board, and the DHIA (Dairy Herd Improvement Association) board. He also was a former member of Michigan Certified Seed Growers and a member of the Frankenmuth and Richville Conservation Clubs.
John was a work-hard, play-hard guy. He bowled in the same league on the same Baker Builders team for 50 years. He also enjoyed playing Euchre with his close friends and often would refer to himself as a “professional” at the game.
From childhood, John loved the game of baseball and forever was a Detroit Tigers fan.
John also had the need for speed. Together with his cherished buddies, he would log thousands of miles on his favorite Polaris snowmobiles. A member of the Frankenmuth Snowmobile Club, his passion for the sport took him as far North as Copper Harbor in the U.P. and as far West as Yellowstone where he’d race against his friends.
If anyone got close to catching up to him, he was known to tweak it to make it go faster.
John found thrill in adventure, also earning his pilot’s license.
When he wasn’t playing hard, he was working hard, alongside his nephews John and Justin Krick to ensure his family’s farm was run properly and always on the cutting edge of technology. At one point, John operated the farm with four generations of his family.
John was well-respected in the community. He led his business to become a trusted supplier to Kellogg’s and Michigan Sugar. The farm was his life, and part of his secret to success was routine. John started each day with a bowl of Kellogg’s Raisin Bran and could be seen often at the Grain Elevator for what was endearingly referred to as the Gera University Coffee Clutch.
John was known to all for his kindness and was affectionately known as everybody's “Uncle John."
In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his friend Janet, traveling and going to many sporting events.
Never being known for saying an unkind word to anyone, John left this world in the exact same spot where he entered, the land that housed his beloved farm.

Surviving are: daughters Lisa Segletes of Troy, Mich., and Sherri (Brent) Rowland of Grand Rapids; grandchildren Michael (Kassidy) O’ Keefe, Trevor Rowland, and Noah Segletes; special nephews John (Mary Jo) Krick and Justin Krick; special friend Janet Skulley, and many nieces, nephews and close friends.

Besides his wife Betty of 41 years, John was predeceased by son Johnny Schluckebier and sister Luella Krick.

Funeral service will take place on Tuesday, May 7, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, 3455 S. Van Buren Road, Richville, Mich. Rev.
