Newman, Edward, of Flushing, age 72, died Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at his home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Rossell Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Flushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scouts of America, Water and Woods Council or the Salvation Army.
Edward was born in Flint, Michigan on November 30, 1940, the son of Harry and Bertha (Boddy) Newman. He graduated from Flint Central High School in 1958 and earned a degree in electronics from Mott Community Junior College. Later in his career, he received graduate certificates from the American Institute of Banking and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Edward graduated from the Executive MBA program University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
As a teenager Edward’s first job was as a carrier and sub-master of The Flint Journal. He was hired by Citizens Bank in 1961 to work in their Data Processing division as a computer operator and software programmer. He was promoted to assistant manager of Credit Card operations and later became an officer of the bank in 1967. Edward continued his career with Citizens Bank retiring after 41 years of service in 2002, as Senior Vice President, Cashier and Secretary to the Board of Directors.
Edward held various officer positions such as President, American Institute of Banking, Flint Region and Chairman, Michigan Bankers Association, Workers Compensation Board. He was dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America and the Tall Pine Council. He served this organization as an adult volunteer for the past 35 years. Edward was an officer of the Council for 20 years and served on the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and chaired numerous operational committees as VP of Administration. He received Scouting’s Silver Beaver award, which is the highest recognition an adult volunteer can receive for community service.
Edward enjoyed photography, antiques, model railroading, camping, and travel around Michigan with his wife Janet. But his most passionate pastime was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; sons, Matthew and wife Denise Newman, Mark and wife Michelle Newman; grandchildren, Nicholas, Alexandra, Jason and Lauren. Edward was preceded in death by his parents.
