Hanson, Olaf “Butch” of Flushing, age 86, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Heartland-Fostrian. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 1, 2013 at Rossell Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Genesee County Humane Society.
Olaf was born in Flint, Michigan on June 11, 1926, the son of Olaf and Lillian (Williams) Hanson. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Mississippi. Butch was one of the first employees of Tom Ryan Distributing and worked for over 30 years. He helped originate the Genesee County Sheriff Posse. Butch was actively involved in the quarter horse business and enjoyed woodworking in his later years.
He is survived by his daughters, Cheri and husband Michael Shaw, Kim and husband Bradley Barber, Shelly Froats and Mark Ward, all of Flushing; grandchildren, Ryan Shaw, Joshua and wife Courtney Barber, Andrea Barber; great-grandchildren, Benton, Kinzlie; brothers, Richard and Elaine Hanson, Earl and Lynn Hanson; sisters, Lillian and Robert VanDeusen and Beverly Freeland. Olaf was preceded in death by his dear friend, Pat Haynes.
