Devere F. Spencer “Bugs”, a cherished member of our family and community passed away at his residence March 13, 2025. Bugs was a loving husband, father, Boppa and uncle, and a beautiful soul who would help anyone. A military burial service will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery (4200 Belford Road, Holly, MI 48442) on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at 2pm sharp, followed by his memorial service at Swartz Creek Masonic Lodge (7449 Miller Road, Swartz Creek, MI 48473) at 3:30pm. No flowers, please.
Bugs grew up in Kalkaska, MI with his parents Vernon and Marie (Schubert) Spencer and his five siblings. He served three years in the United States Army, studied at both Michigan State University and Mott College, and retired from General Motors after working 34 years as a skilled tradesman. He met and married the love of his life, Connie Ackerman in 1967. Bugs lived a life filled with love, friendship, humor and service to others. He was known for his love and support for his family and his humor, wit and strong will. He was a dedicated volunteer whose generosity knew no bounds. Bugs was involved in many organizations throughout his life, including Oasis Shrine Club, Fenton Shrine Club, American Legion Post 367, Morning Star Masonic Lodge, Elf Khurafeh Shrine Circus and Montrose Blueberry Festival. He enjoyed playing solitaire, western movies and watching Michigan State Spartans and Detroit Tigers play. He looked forward to reading the paper and morning coffee with friends. Bugs also enjoyed cooking, specially making fried potatoes for Kayden.
Bugs is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years Connie L. Spencer, daughter Tracie (Alan) Raymond, grandchildren Caitlin (Bobby) Barron, Hope Castle, Hannah Newton, Paisley Castle, great grandson Kayden Bennett, and several nieces and nephews. Bugs was preceded in death by his dearly loved daughter Amy M. Castle, along with his parents and siblings. Bugs’ legacy is exemplified by his love and generosity, and it will continue to inspire and guide us. |
