McNAMARA, Peggy Anne (Atkins), 84, of Birch Run passed away at Maple Wood Manor, Clio, on January 5, 2015. Peggy was born January 4, 1931 in Millersburg, MI to George and Grace (Strong) Atkins. She grew up in Millersburg and attended that school for grades 1 through 10. She then went to Onaway, MI High School for grades 11 and 12. She graduated with the class of 1948 as Class Valedictorian. Peggy went on to become a teacher like her mother before her. She began her teaching career in 1949 in a one room school called the Wiltse School of Freeland. She then taught in Burt, MI School for the next 7 years. After teaching for 30 years in Birch Run, she retired from teaching with a total of 38 ½ years.
Peggy married Ed McNamara January 4, 1964 in Saginaw, MI. She and Ed raised 7 children (4 boys and 3 girls). Ed and Peg were members of Ss. Francis and Clare Parish (formerly Sacred Heart) in Birch Run. She was a member of their Altar Society, and the League of Catholic Women. She was also a member of M.E.A., N.E.A., and a CMU alumnus. She volunteered at the Edward C. McNamara Health Center in Birch Run, and for many years Peggy was also secretary/treasurer for the Michigan Branch Auxiliary National League of Postmasters.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Edward, and 7 step-children, James (Diane) McNamara of Flushing, Michael (Pam) McNamara of Swartz Creek, Helen (Max) Mitchell of Birch Run, Edward (JoAnne) McNamara of Birch Run, Christopher (Diane) McNamara of Clio, Mary Ann (Paul McFarland) Gust of Montrose, Jeanette (David) Buthker of Birch Run, 19 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by 4 sisters-in-law, Lee Atkins, Jean Atkins, Barb Atkins, and Margaret Periard, 3 brothers-in-law, Robert (Janet) McNamara, Rev. Thomas McNamara, and Richard McNamara, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Perry, Willard, and Andy Atkins, sister-in-law, Vangie McNamara, brothers-in-law, Thomas Lafferty and William Periard, and grandson Michael Mitchell.
Visitation will be at O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Birch Run on Wednesday January 7th from 2-8PM where a Scripture service will be held at 6:30pm. Funeral Mass will take place Thursday, January 8th, 11:00am, at Ss. Francis and Clare Parish in Birch Run, with visitation beginning at 10:00am. Interment will take place at Birch Run Cemetery.
