Mary Kay Teichman age 92 of Durand passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at The Lodges of Durand. A Celebration of Life will be 12 noon, Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Family will receive friends on Friday from 6-8 PM and one hour prior to the service.
Mary Kay was born March 4, 1924 in Owosso, MI a daughter of James and Alice (Hall) Zimmerman. She graduated from Owosso High School in 1941. In 1945 she graduated from Kahlor Methodist School of Nursing in Rochester, MN. After school she worked 3 years in Owosso for Dr. Merz. On November 13, 1948 she married Victor J. Teichman. From 1954-1964 Mary Kay worked for Memorial Hospital. She joined the Shiawassee County Health Department in 1965. While at the health department, she taught expected parent classes, associated with the WIC program, Well Child Screening Clinics, special services and Maternal Infant Care Program. She was recognized by her peers in the Michigan Nurses Association in 1978 with the Nurse Achievement Award. This award was brought about by her involvement in establishing a child abuse and neglect task force, referral system for parents of high risk infants, the health departments EPSDT and WIC programs. She assisted the health department in writing grants to help fund community health programs. She was active in the Shiawassee County Nurses Association, Shiabwa Chapter of the ABWA. She had additional civic interests as a member of the DeWitt Dock Association and the Higgins Lake Civic Association. Her family was the main focus of her life. Her favorite place to go was to the cottage at Higgins Lake.
Mary Kay is survived by her children, David (Partner Robert Fields) Teichman of Lakewood, CA, Linda (Bill Sr.) Burns of Vernon, Patti (Matt) Hoddy of Dewey, AZ and Lee (Kim) Teichman of Bancroft; step-daughter, Vicki Grumley; grandchildren, Steven (Beth) Grumley, Andrew (Christine) Teichman, Kaitlin Teichman, Mark Burns, Julieann Burns, Kristin Hoddy-Williams, Danielle Hoddy and Jordan Teichman; and great grandchildren, Alicia, Michael and Matthew Grumley and Isaac Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Teichman; parents, James and Alice Zimmerman; sister, Florence (Glen) Horn; and brothers, Jim (Joyce) and Al (Evelyn) Zimmerman.
