BURKS, Mrs. Eunice Elaine - age 82, fondly known to many as “Elaine,” made a peaceful transition to be with her Lord Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at her residence. Family hour 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2014 at Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church, 3502 Lapeer Rd. with homegoing service commencing at 11 a.m. Pastor Marvin A. Jennings, Sr. officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Association, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 10 a.m. Friday. Mrs. Burks will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. and may be viewed from 1 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.
Mrs. Eunice Elaine Burks was the oldest of ten children born to Ola Mae (Cameron) and Sylvester Byrd, Sr. on August 30, 1931 in Roxie, Mississippi. She came to Flint in the early 1950’s where she met and married Clarence Burks. Elaine proudly provided in-home child care to many families over a span of 50-plus years. She also was an after hour receptionist for the L.E. Moon Funeral Home until her health declined.
Mrs. Burks leaves a legacy of love and precious memories. Surviving are: her children, Joyce (Curtis) Crump, M. Denise Burks, Rita Doyle, Pamela (Henry) Simpson, Clarence Burks, and David (Alisha) Burks; Niece/daughter of the heart, Mashavu (Rayford) McKinstry; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Elois Davis, Betty Squalls, Dorothy Evans, Margaret, George and Bobbie Jean Byrd; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, many special families and friends dear to her heart including Larry and Valeria Moon and their staff, Sue Ella Downs, Mary Davis Roberts, and Mae Perry.
Mrs. Elaine Burks was preceded by: her husband, Clarence Burks; granddaughter, Debra Warren; parents, Ola Mae and Sylvester Byrd, Sr.; sister, Marvel Ruth Huff; twin brother, Sylvester Byrd, Jr.; brothers, Leroy and Charles Byrd.
