Lela Mae Harvey was born on December 1, 1930, in Dubach, Louisiana. She was the third child, and only daughter of Hurley and Ruth Dixson. During Lela’s formative years, her parents moved to Portland, Oregon, seeking better employment opportunities. After securing employment, and a place to live, she and her four brothers joined their parents in Portland. Lela finished elementary school and went to junior high school there.
After World War II, her father was again looking for employment opportunities, which led him and his wife, to Flint, Michigan. Again, after securing employment and a place for the family, Lela and her brothers joined their parents in Flint. In Flint, she attended Northern High School, from which she graduated and received her diploma. After high school, Lela attended Mott Community College and earned an Associate Degree in business administration. However, she decided she really didn’t like office work, and she went to work for AC Spark Plug.
While working for AC Spark Plug she met and married John T. Harvey, II. From this union two children, Ruth D. Harvey and John T. Harvey III were born. Also, while working for AC Spark Plug, she decided to go back to school, and become a social worker. This meant, starting over education wise which she did at The University of Michigan-Flint, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree. Not knowing how, but believing God would provide, Lela applied for a Master of Arts degree in Social Work at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She was accepted and received scholarship money to obtain this degree. After graduation, Lela worked for the Urban League of Flint, the Substance Abuse Commission, and finally the Flint Public School System, from which she retired.
Now, Lela had a serious spiritual life. She and the rest of her immediate family joined Canaan Baptist Church after moving to Flint. While there she was taught and nurtured in the scriptures. And like so many young adults, she decided to take a break from church. But, she said that God spoke to her, and back to church she went. While attending Canaan, she was a trustee, sang in the Voices of Canaan with her husband John, was a member of the Young Matrons missionary group; and the junior high students Sunday School teacher, (Note: she stayed with one group of students until they graduated from high school, because no one else could handle them. Most of these students went to college and one became a social worker, like her).
Lela and the rest of the Dixson and Harvey family moved their membership to Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, to support her brother, the Late Reverend H. B. Dixson. While at Mt. Zion, Lela taught Sunday School, and attended Bible Study on a regular basis. She also was an usher and group leader. Lela was the adult supervisor and teacher for the youth ushers. In her latter days, she was happy just being on the mother’s board.
