Max Allan Smith, age 82 of Lapeer, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2019, at McLaren Flint surrounded by his loving family.
Max was born July 9, 1936, in North Branch to the late Alan and Elizabeth (Wilson) Smith. Max graduated from Mayville High School with the class of 1955. He married Barbara Goodell on June 22, 1957, in Mayville. Max worked in the occupational therapy department at Lapeer Oakdale for 28 years teaching woodworking before retiring in 1983. He then worked for Lapeer City Parks and Recreation for more than 7 years. Max enjoyed golfing, playing cards, motorcycle riding, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved woodcarving.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Smith; three children, Julie (Tim) Hock, Steven (Sandra) Smith and Michael (Sara) Smith; nine grandchildren, Parker (Kelly), Palmer (Rayne) and Preston (Adrianna) Smith, Jonathon and Cameron Hock, Brandon, Emma, Sara and Shaylynn Smith; one great-grandchild, Ariadne Smith; two brothers, Ron and Lloyd Smith; and one sister, Eleanor Gilbert.
Max was preceded in death by his son, Douglas Smith; and two brothers, Arthur and Richard Smith.
Cremation services have been entrusted to Avram Funeral Home. A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Parkinson Foundation.
