ZIMMERMAN, Mary Lou – Of Clio, age 86, died Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at her residence.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Reverend Carol Blair Bouse officiating.
Those desiring may make contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Family will receive visitors from 4- 8 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 a.m. Friday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Mary Lou was born in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan on November 14, 1932,
The daughter of the late William and Gladys (King) Lowther.
She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School, Class of 1951.
On July 18, 1955 she married her beloved husband, William Zimmerman in Angola, Indiana and he preceded her in death on September 17, 2006.
They first settled in Flint and later moved to Clio, raising their children, William Jr. (Paula) of Grand Blanc and Gregory (Celia) of Big Rapids, Michigan.
Mary Lou was a lifelong advocate and champion of children and volunteerism. She committed herself to service with over 30 years in the Flint Community Schools-Daily Elementary in the Beecher District, first serving as lunch mother and volunteer and then serving as a Teacher Paraprofessional for 26 years. Mary Lou’s seasonal school bulletin board decorations were celebrated for being very colorful and artistic.
She was a Pack 255 Cub Scout Den Mother in one of Michigan’s largest scouting districts of the 1960’s, where William was Pack 255 Leader.
Whether it was Flint Beecher or Clio, Mary Lou was the “go to” mother of the neighborhood. Children would flock to her house for popsicles, ice cream or just friendly chats and guidance. She was the epitome of a family-centered wife and mother, where supporting her husband, children and grandchildren was her priority. Some of Mary Lou’s favorite pastimes included spending time with her sons and their families, especially the grandchildren; camping, getting together with her five sisters (Evelyn, Shirley, “Gerry”, “Tiny” and “Tootie”) and their families (brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and others) playing cards; garage sales; mowing grass and pulling weeds; decorating William’s graveside; babysitting her grandchildren; hanging holiday-specific decorations throughout the year; ensuring the U.S. Flag was raised up the family pole in the spring and retired in the fall; meeting friends for breakfast, lunch or dinner and doing laundry, yes, laundry. She loved to put her heart and soul into getting soiled clothes their absolute cleanest. There was never a stain Mary Lou couldn’t erase. And ironing…she took great pride in ironing her family’s dress clothes, right up to the day she landed in the hospital with a broken hip in May, 2018.
Mary Lou is survived by her sons, William and his wife, Paula, Gregory and his wife, Celia;
grandchildren, DayLynn (Jacob)Jones, Holly (Michael) Sova, Jacob, Tyler and Caleb;
great-grandchildren, Londyn, Brinley, Easlyn, Gabby and Jacob;
sister, Tootie;
sister-in-law, Sharon;
many nieces, nephews; great neighbors and friends.
Heartfelt recognition and sincere appreciation to Dr. Peter Thoms (Cheryl), personal physician and family friend for over 50 years.
Special thanks also to Dr. Schumacher, Reverence Hospice, Marge, Matt, Dan, Hank, Marah, Micki and Kellie;
Dr. Shafi Ahmed’s staff, especially Chris, Grand Blanc Regency, McLaren Flint-6th floor, Ascension Genesys Hospital-ICU and Fresenius Kidney Care for their care and kindness, Reverend Carol Blair Bouse and the Hope United Methodist Church-Flint.
