Evelyn Ada (Rockafellow Green) Mackey April 30, 1921-July 13, 2020
Daughter of Roland Perry and Hazel Elizabeth (Sheldon) Rockafellow passed away peacefully at home. A descendent of patriots and pioneers, Evelyn was a direct descendant of Johann Peter Rockefeller and her great-great-grandfather, Elias Rockefeller, was the first blacksmith in Genesee County. She was also the direct descendent of nine documented soldiers of the American Revolution.
In 1942, she married John August Green and had three children with him: John Michael Green (Gayle), Mary Alice (Green) Rozenberg (Don), and Roland Perry Green (who preceded her in death.) After the death of her first husband, she married Bruce Benjamin Mackey and had two children: Robert Bruce Mackey (Karen) and Margaret Elizabeth Mackey.
Evelyn worked for the City of Flint in the Assessment Office, for the Chief of Police, for Joe Abraham (CEO of Hurley Hospital), and for several mayors. She an executive board member of AFSCME Council #25 and elected to the AFL-CIO regional board, where she served as an officer of the board and recognized for her service when she left. She was proud of her years as the AFSCME representative to the United Way and again was recognized for her work. She received the Stewart R. Mott Leadership Award for her work with Planned Parenthood. She loved to dance even when in a wheelchair. She was proud of her membership in the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the marches she attended. She was active in the Flint Unitarian Universalist Church in Flint from the early 1970s.
When she moved to McAllen Texas, Evelyn became active in the McAllen Unitarian Universalist Church and was especially involved with their battered woman and Latino rights projects. She coordinated projects between the two churches. When she moved back to Michigan to be with family, she resumed her work with the Flint church but always had a love for her time in Texas.
She is survived by her children; three grandchildren: John Jeffrey Green (Amy), Jennifer Ann Green, and Kyle Fisher (Kelli); and two great grandchildren: Phoebe Andi Green and Bryce Fisher.
Contributions in her honor may be sent to the Flint Unitarian Universalist Church or the Flint Eastside Mission. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a limited gathering for visitation on July 21, 2020 at 12:00 at Swartz Funeral Home with the funeral to follow at 2PM. Information on a larger memorial service will be available later.
