Tom was a devout Catholic and prior to moving to Brighton, a member of Holy Redeemer Church where her served as a Eucharistic Minister and assisted in outreach programs to help the poor.
Thomas J. McGee was born June 17th, 1930 in Lincoln Park, Michigan, son of Anna Dillon McGee and Michael Thomas McGee. He had six brothers; John, Patrick, Michael, Kevin, Gerald, and Joe and four sisters Theresa, Annie, Margaret, Delores and Carmel. His loving wife of 55 years, Mary Joan McGee, his sister Carmel of Visalia, CA and his children Judith Ann (Mark) Westerberg of Pinckney, Michigan and his son Pat (Stacy) McGee of Los Angeles, CA, survives him.
Tom had five grandchildren he loved and adored, Nicole, Patrick, Matthew, Zachery and John Joseph Westerberg.
Tom married his childhood friend Mary Joan Kennedy July 2nd 1960. Their commitment to one another and the church was personified daily by their choice to help those in need. They were featured in a 2002 Flint Journal article called “Making a Difference”. A journalist followed Tom and Joan as they traveled around the Flint area handing out coats and shoes. In recent years, Tom focused on giving away socks, and was sometimes respectively referred to as the sock man. Other community involvement and volunteer work included; volunteer for West Bendle Literacy Program, helping build and start up a bingo hall from the ground up to subsidize a catholic grade school in financial need (St. Alexis in Ypsilanti, Michigan), founding member of Catholic Committee of Concern, volunteer at North End Soup Kitchen.
Tom attended Detroit Catholic High School. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University and later a Master’s in Education from Michigan State University. He worked for General Motors for 28 years as an Analyst and later after he retired became a substitute teacher in the Flint-area.
Tom’s military experience included two tours in Korea. He was a veteran of both the Army and the Air Force. Tom was also a member of VFW822 and Past Commander and Chaplain of DAV 3 (Disabled Veterans).
Politically active and always trying to make a difference, Tom’s service was appreciated at the local and national levels. He served 6 years on Madison Heights Zoning Board of Appeals, served as Secretary of the Superior Township Planning Committee, elected 2 terms as Chairman of Parks and Recreation Commission, Washtenaw County, and served 6 years on the Board of Catholic Social Services, Genesee County. He was involved in many campaigns for candidates and officials he believed could make a difference.
For years Tom was a member of the Ancient order of Hibernians, and the Knights of Columbus. Each year Tom looked forward to retreating at Manresa, a Jesuit House in Bloomfield Hills, where he prayed, and spent time reflecting. Another annual tradition was his family get-together at Camp Dearborn. For 27 years, Tom and his family would enjoy the company of each other and some great nights by the campfire playing an old family card game of Buckup.
Tom enjoyed talking and sharing stories. He appreciated people and was a lover of life. Tom's smile, enthusiasm, and spirit will be missed but never forgotten.
