SPICER, Duane Byron - - Age 87 years old. Promoted to Glory on November 23, 2018 in Rockford, Michigan of a rare spinal cancer, liposarcoma. He was diagnosed in August of 2018. Duane was born August 25, 1931 in Flint, Michigan. Married June 16, 1951 at the Salvation Army Flint Citadel Co to Lois Ann Richards. Duane was a lifetime member of the Salvation Army Flint Citadel and attended Grace Community Church for the past eight years. Duane served as Treasurer at the Salvation Army and also was Treasurer of the Genesee County Sportsman Club for 45 years. Duane was a passionate photographer, taking pictures for the Flint Journal and making home videos. He was an historian, researching Genealogy, and topics such as the Civil War, World War II, and Chuck Yeager. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and a charter member of: the United States Airforce in Great Britain, the Genesee County Historical Society, the Jackson County Historical Society, the Kent Family Historical Society, and the Flint Genealogical Society. Duane also played softball for 45 years, first with the Salvation Army, winning the State Championship in 1967, and later played with the Florida Parks League for the Encore RV Park “Snowbirds” team. On March 6, he hit the cycle (single, double, triple, homerun) with his bat, “Fat Boy.” Duane loved fishing, hunting, bowling (had a 298 score), and was an avid Tiger’s fan. Duane graduated from Bendle High School a year early, in 1948, and was recently honored at this 70th Class Reunion “for his time and effort in keeping our class reunions ‘alive’ through the years.” Duane graduated from Michigan State University in 1952, at age twenty and began his employment that same year at General Motors where he worked for 37 years, rising to Supervisor of Budgets of AC Spark Plugs. One of his many distinguished accomplishments was that he wrote the first computer program, converting from handwriting to computers, for the budget for AC Spark Plug. He retired in 1988. Duane was a devoted family man, preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lois Ann (Richards) Spicer in 2009, his oldest son Mark Alan Spicer in 2015, his father, George Thomas Spicer in 1997, and his mother, Olive Edna (Mitchell) Spicer in 1990. Surviving are his children JoAnn Susan Zak, Stephen Duane Spicer (Charlene), Kenneth Frederick Spicer (Suzanne), and Marlene Marie Spicer. Duane had 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also, Duane wanted to mention his lifelong best friend, Frank Maxwell. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 26, 2018 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm & 5:00 – 8:00pm, Tuesday, November 27, 2018 from 11:00am – 3:00pm & 5:00pm -8:00pm at Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Road, Grand Blanc, Michigan. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at 11:00am with one hour of visitation prior to the service, with Major Randy Hellstrom officiating at the Salvation Army Flint Citadel Corps, 211 W. Kearsley Street, Flint, Michigan.
