Mary Jane Von Brockdorff Steingraeber -- Age 77, of Swartz Creek, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 in her home surrounded by her loving family. A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, G 9020 S. Saginaw Road, Grand Blanc, the Rev. George L. Cleaves Jr and Pastor Steve Stahlhut officiating. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will happen at a later date in the St. Christopher's Episcopal Church columbarium.

Mary Jane was born in Saginaw, MI on Feb. 20, 1936, the daughter of Dallas and Mary Jane Rumbold. She was raised in Flint and was graduated from St. Michael's Catholic High School in 1954.

She married Hugo Von Brockdorff on May 12, 1956, in Flint.

Mary Jane's passions were family, faith and friends. She was interested and engaged in the lives of her children and their families. She rarely missed an opportunity to attend a school function, musical performance or sporting event in which her grandchildren participated.

She and Hugo were actively involved in American Field Services programming, housing foreign exchange students for 10 years. Mary Jane remained connected to her international "children" and their families as they matured and continued to exchange correspondence with them until shortly before her death.
Mary Jane was an active member of United in Christ Church and its predecessor, St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Flint Township and was secretary to the church council.

During her life, she was employed in many vocations. She met her future husband while she worked at Herrlich's Drug Store in downtown Flint. She was a playground/lunchroom helper at Randels Elementary School in the Carman School District for 13 years and was a school bus aid assisting special needs children.

She loved children and spent several years babysitting her grandchildren and others under the guise that she was helping their parents when in reality she wanted to spend more time with the children she adored and who adored her.
She also was a fine cook although she would grudgingly admit she was never quite able to master the fine art of making edible Jell-O in any form and her fried chicken was more apt to be a test for the smoke detector rather than the palate.

After Hugo's death in 1994, Mary Jane married Carl Steingraeber on Sept. 12, 1998. They enjoyed 10 years together before his death on Feb. 28, 2008.
She continued to live a full life, proudly attending the high school and college graduations of her grandchildren and enjoying the company of her family, her church family and friends.
