SCHMITZER, Joy Jane – of Flint, MI, age 56, passed away October 15, 2018 at home surrounded by her family. Cremation has taken place and no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Henry Ford Health System Development Office, 1 Ford Place #5A, Detroit, MI 48202-1962
Joy was born in East Chicago, IN on March 31, 1962, daughter of the late Earl and Helen (Hughes) Acheson. She married Steven Schmitzer in 1988 at the Water St. Pavilion. Joy touched the souls of many children at Genesee County Head Start. Her students lovingly called her “Miss Joy”. She was a cancer survivor and an avid “Mile High” Broncos fan.
Joy is survived by her husband, Steve Schmitzer; sons, Darwin (Samantha) Schmitzer, Mike Schmitzer; grandchildren, Malik, Zane and Joslyn Schmitzer; sisters, Rachel (Jeffrey) Nettles, Debra Acheson; brother-in-law, Edmund Scheetz and his daughter, Serena Scheetz; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Joan Scheetz and Mary Henry; brother-in-law, Bobby May.
