Dale was born in Pontiac, MI on April 5, 1943, the son of Evelyn Jean and Charles Coggins. He married Janet Easterbrook on October 4, 1968, at the Presbyterian Church of Flushing. Flushing is where they chose to live together for the following 55 years, raising a family and becoming an integral part of the community.
Dale loved his family very much. As his children were growing up, he and Jan took them on many adventures including multiple trips to Disney World, Washington DC, the beautiful beaches of Michigan and a spectacular 66 day trip around the US visiting relatives and sites of interest for their children. One of his favorite trips was the yearly trip to Oscoda Michigan where family came from Kansas, California and Canada to spend the week together. Dale was all about his family.
Dale was hired in 1964, by the Flushing Community Schools as a life science teacher. Throughout his tenure at Flushing, he taught many classes including; Biology, Honors Biology, Genetics, Health, First Aid and more. He also coached football for several years. In 1982, he became the “Athletic Coordinator” of Flushing High School. For 42 years he supervised athletic events, coordinated ticket sales and workers, helped the Athletic Boosters and enjoyed being one of the Raiders’ biggest fans (even for soccer!) In 2005, he retired from teaching in order to enjoy time with his new granddaughter Emma, and soon to be grandson Bradlee. They attended athletic events with him and loved following “Beepee” around the field. This, along with being the Michigan Wolverines biggest fan, were his favorite pastimes.
Dale is survived by; daughter, Lynnette Coggins; daughter-in-law, Kristy Coggins; grand-children, Emma and Bradlee, sister Kathy (Steve) Hughes; Sister in laws, Margie Coggins, Judy Easterbrook, and Therese Townsend. Several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, special “adopted” children and grandchildren, along with many special friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jan, son, Anthony, his brother George, and his dear friend, Fr. Paul Schwermer.
A special thank you to the Petrowski and Hamilton families who have been so helpful in taking care of him and helping us navigate the challenges of the last year. Also to the amazing staff at Flushing Community Schools that helped him get to that “60” year mark. The family would also like to thank the nurses and doctors at Hurley Hospital and Lavigne Hospice for Compassionate Care for their support and wonderful care.
