PHELPS, Walter Lee - Of Alger, age 75, died Sunday, June 2, 2024 in the care of his loving family in Flushing, Michigan.
Funeral service will be held 12pm Monday, June 10, 2024 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint.
Visitation 4-8pm Sunday and 11am Monday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery.
Walter was born in Pontiac, Michigan on July 28, 1948, the son of the late Aulcy Leebon Phelps and Mary June Owen. Walter retired from the GM Metal Fab plant in Flint, MI where he was elected as a committeeman for UAW Local 659. As a Michigan State University Master Gardner he organized and volunteered on many community beautification projects in Gladwin and Ogemaw Counties. Walter donated to countless conservation organizations and was a supporter of his local 4-H. He loved watching the Detroit Tigers and attended as many games as he could. Walter was a dedicated member of his veteran organizations and served as a post chaplain and on the Honor Guard. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Disabled Veterans and the American Legion.
Surviving are sons, Philip Phelps and Aaron Phelps;
stepdaughter, Deanna Grignani (Ben);
sister, Peggy Smith;
half-brother, Tracy Phelps;
nephews, Joe Herron and Todd Herron;
grandchildren, Britney Ridsdale, Jenessa Steck, Kirstie Wilson, Mason Grignani, Eli Grignani;
great-grandchildren, Maverick Corwin, Jameson Stillwagon, Waylon Stillwagon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and son Walter L. Phelps Jr.
