ALFORD, Orvel G. "Red", of Flushing, age 81, died Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at McLaren-Flint. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Swartz Funeral Home 1225 West Hill Road. Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 18, 2013. Visitation 5-8 p.m. Friday and 1-4 & 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Red was born in Lake Delton, Wisconsin on October 4, 1932 and was a resident of the Flint area since 1954. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Joyce Beuerle on October 27, 1956. He was a member of the Carpenter Union #1373, UAW #653, Flushing Senior Center and the VFW in New Lothrop. He worked at Christman Company and was involved in the remodeling of St. Joseph Hospital. Red was a master craftsman/carpenter for over 30 years. He was involved in the construction of Autoworld and University Pavilion and supervised the contruction of Faith Tabernacle. He also built Orvel's Restaurant on Miller Road which was named after him. Joyce and his children operated the restaurant for 10 years. Red was a carpenter for General Motors Pontiac Motor Division for 13 years. Surviving are his wife, Joyce Marie; 4 children, Lori and husband Pete Peterson, Pam and husband Tom Donahue, Tammy and husband Steve Bearup and Jeff Alford; 6 grandchildren, Erik (K.C.), Darren, Hallie, Kaleigh, Tommy (Josie) and Sam; 5 great-grandchildren, Skylee, Royce, Ollie, Dylenger and Tanner; very special brother, Spence and wife Joyce Alford; very special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Auntie Myra and Uncle Bob; many very special nieces, nephews and special friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Norma (Grover) Alford; sister, Charle.
