Florence "Pat" Mishina (Bednarski)

Born: 5/7/1930
Died: 5/9/2020
Age: 90
Community: Davison, MI

Mrs. Florence “Pat” Mishina (Bednarski) died peacefully at the University of Michigan Hospital on May 9 at the age of 90 from complications related to cancer.
Pat was born on May 7, 1930 in Flint, Michigan to parents of Polish decent. Throughout her life, Pat placed an importance on life-long learning and education, continuing to take classes well into her 80’s. She graduated from All Saints High School in 1947 and went on to earn a certificate in Statistical Typing from General Motors Institute in 1948 and gained her nursing license in 1953. From there she went on to work in Flint area hospitals as a nurse.
Pat was also an accomplished artist. Her fine-art career began while working nights full time and taking the bus to attend day classes in order to earn her degrees. She earned an Associate in Arts with high honors from Flint Community Junior College in 1962; Bachelor of Fine Arts with high honors from Michigan State University in 1964; and then attended the University of Hawaii on a prestigious East-West scholarship where she earned her Master of Arts in 1966. Pat’s artwork, including her photography and sculptures, went on to win numerous awards and be featured in exhibitions at the Flint Institute of Art and Detroit Institute of Art, as well as local galleries. She later worked as an art instructor at Flint Community Schools and Mott Community College.
While at the University of Hawaii she met the love of her life, Frank. Frank moved to Michigan and they were married on July 1, 1967. Pat spoke often of her world travels and love of nature. She was a night-owl who loved to make new memories with her nieces and nephews and their young children. One of her favorite activities was taking them to fancy dinners and trying to order nearly one of everything on the menu so they could “try it all.” Later in life you could often find her sitting in her chair watching the NBA or golf late into the night. Faith played a very important role throughout her life as she was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Davison.
Pat was preceded in death by her husband Frank Mishina, parents Frank and Caroline Bednarski, and 6 brothers: Frank, Eddie, Johnny, Chester, Albin, and Raymond. Known affectionately as “Aunt Pat” by many, she is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A visitation will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Davison, MI on Saturday, May 23 from 10:30am-noon. Due to the current pandemic, the funeral service will be private, with lifelong friend Fr. Andrew A. Czajkowski officiating. Private entombment will follow at St. John Cemetery. Family plans to hold a rosary service on her birthday next year where all will be welcome to attend and celebrate Pat’s life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Davison, in Pat’s memory.
