John Soloc, age 90 of Durand, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2011 at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 700 E. Columbia Dr. Durand, Michigan 48429. Fr. Jeffrey A. Poll will be officiating with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon. The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel on Tuesday from 2-4 & 5:30-8 PM with a rosary being prayed at 5:30 PM.
Mr. Soloc was born on February 9, 1921 in Toledo, Ohio the son of Joseph and Anna (Gomos) Soloc. He attended Durand High School, graduating with the class of 1939. After high school, John joined the Air Force where he was a pilot during World War II. After 5 years with the Air Force, he spent 15 years with the Reserves before retiring as a Major.
John married Margie Fletcher on April 20, 1946 in Enid, Oklahoma and together raised 2 daughters. After Mr. Soloc’s active duty in the Air Force, he went on to work for the United States Postal Service for 30 years, retiring as Postmaster in 1977.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Durand, the Air Force Association and a life member of the Durand VFW Reed-Raymond Post 2272.
Mr. Soloc is survived by 2 daughters: Terry Lee (Paul) Freel of Troy, MI and Sandra Joann Bensinger of Swartz Creek; 4 grandchildren: Brian (Brooke) Freel, Gregory (Amy) Freel, Keith (Rose) Freel, Derek Bensinger and his father Michael Bensinger; 3 great grandchildren: Cullen Freel, Cameron Freel and Coryn Soul.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie, in 2006; 3 brothers: Joe, Gabriel and Tony Soloc; 2 sisters: Charlotte Urban, Rose Geeck and grandson, Andy Freel.
