LANE, James William “Jim” – Of Grand Blanc and Flint, age 88 passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at Genesys Regional Medical Center.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Reverend Jim James officiating.
A Private burial will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery.
Visitation 3-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, Grand Blanc Township K-9 Unit or Grand Blanc Parks and Recreation Pavilion Fund.
Mr. Lane was born in Flint, Michigan, the son of James Bluford and Clara (Wenn) Lane.
Jim was a graduate of Northern High School, served in the U.S. Army in World War II, was employed by Buick Motor Division and retired from the Flint Police Department.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #413, enjoyed ringing the bell for The Salvation Army, Greeter at Genesys Hospice; was inducted into the Greater Flint Sports Hall of Fame on the 1951 James Lumber State Recreational Basketball Team, and the 1941 American Legion Fisher Post #342 Baseball Team.
He enjoyed reminiscing with his friends and the younger generation about the "old days' in Flint, the Flint/Central rivalry, sports and fishing.
He was married by best friend, Mayor James Rutherford, to Cathy Lane for 29 years.
Jim spent many years with Cathy, family and their friends at Blue Lake.
He enjoyed attending Powers basketball games and working out at Hurley Fitness Center.
Jim is survived by their children, Michael (Mary) Lane, Karen (Dallas) Evans and Matthew (Rita) Lane and their mother, Erma Lane; John (Ruth) Herman, Michael Herman, Kelly Herman, Daniel (Paula) Herman and Mark (Ann) Hoerrmann;
grandchildren, Jason (Lesha) Evans, Greg (Kristie) Evans, Chanda (Mateen) Cleaves, Adriyel (Gina) Lane, Jesko (Kathlun) Lane, Jessica Lane and Leo Herman;
great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Cassidy, Kylee, Cody, Anna and Dallas Evans, Jalen and Mateen Cleaves.
His family wants to thank his many caregivers at Genesys Hospital, Grand Blanc Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and Alternative Elderly Care for their loving care.
