Ronald Earl Friend Sr., passed away at the age of 80, on May 4, 2024, at Vibrant Life Senior Living.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel with burial to follow in Union Plains Cemetery, Byron. Ron's family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 4-7 pm and again Wednesday one hour prior to the service.
Born on April 7, 1944, in Flint, Michigan, Ron was the son of the late Ivan and Agnes (Ware) Friend. Ron's life was characterized by kindness, humor, and an unwavering dedication to his family.
Ron was raised in the Byron and Bancroft area, where he graduated from Byron High School in the class of 1963. It was there that he met the love of his life, marrying his high school sweetheart, Shirley K. Stiles, on October 3, 1964. Ron and Shirley shared nearly six decades of marriage, filled with shared joys and triumphs.
His working career began shortly after graduation, and later in 1995, Ron retired from Buick after 32 years of dedicated service. A proud member of the UAW Local 599, Ron exemplified the spirit of solidarity that defines Flint's storied labor history. His commitment to service extended well beyond the walls of Buick, as he was actively involved in several fraternal and service organizations. He was a respected member of the Byron Lodge #80 F&AM, the Huldah Chapter #212 OES, Durand Sons of AmVets Post #2273, Durand Eagles Club #3851, and Moose Lodge #1616.
Despite his busy schedule, Ron enjoyed a lot of hobbies, including, hunting, farming, camping, golfing, biking and spending time with his family.
Ron is survived by his wife, Shirley, his daughter, Holly (Brent) Cameron, his son, Ron Friend; 5 grandchildren: Alex Cameron, Eric (Heather) Cameron, Stephany Friend, Stephen Friend and Josh Friend. He will also be dearly missed by his sister, Janet (Dale) Carsten; brother, Bernard Friend; sister-in-law, Bonnie Friend and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Ron was predeceased by his brother, Eugene, and sister-in-law, Diane.
