Mary Bell Gerlach, 98, of Lapeer since 1946, died Saturday November 19, 2016. She was born January 31, 1918 in Reese to parents Knox and Marcia (McGaw) Young. Mary Bell was a graduate of Fairgrove High School, class of 1935. She married Warren Gerlach on August 24, 1946 at the First Presbyterian Church, Fairgrove.
Mrs. Gerlach was a rural school teacher in Tuscola County for 5 years, Highland Schools for about 5, Woodside, Mayfield Elementary and finally Irwin Elementary; retiring in 1980 after 33 years. She has been a very faithful, involved member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Lapeer, since 1947. Mrs. Gerlach worked for the Good Fellows for many years, volunteered at the Lapeer Hospital for over 25 years and was a deserving Lapeer area Citizen of the Year in 2001. Mary Bell was a dear, sweet lady - known by many; she will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her sons: Bradley (Sherry) Gerlach of Indian River, Dr. Roger (Carol) Gerlach of Ada, grandchildren: Keith, Emily and Jenna, niece: Mary Jane (Jerry) Nobel of Fairgrove, nephew: John (Maribell) Young of Caro. Mrs. Gerlach was preceded in death by her husband: Warren (in 1983), siblings: Joe Young, Jane Young as well as an infant sibling and her parents.
Mary Bell’s visitation will be 2:00-6:00pm Sunday at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Her funeral will be 11:00am Monday November 21, 2016 at the funeral home officiated by Chaplain Lawrence Kluck. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Fairgrove.
