Traverse City-Alice A. Barr, 92, a long time resident of Traverse City, died early Thursday morning, September 30, 2010, at Traverse Manor.
Born in Cedar, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Theresa (Rice) King. In 1938, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City, she married Harold B. Barr, who preceded her in death on April 5, 1983,
Alice was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church, where she participated in various activities, along with helping her friend, Sister Katherine.
She directed her bright mind and generous spirit to many organizations including Bunco Club, Quilters Club, Odd Ball Bowling Team and the Traverse City Senior Center. Alice enjoyed sewing, quilting, china painting, bowling, playing cards, bingo and gardening.
Alice was a gifted seamstress who worked at Bartling's and the Marie Evelyn Shop, before working at the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital in the Occupational Therapy Department, retiring in 1984.
In 1947, Alice and Harold built their Traverse City home, where Alice had lived for nearly 63 years.
Alice is survived by her caring sons; Allen Barr of Eaton Rapids and Harold (Carol) Barr of Traverse City; four grandchildren, Natalie Johnson, Jennifer Barr, Terry Barr and Emily Harvey; five great- grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Alice was preceded in death by her sisters, Tillie Flaska, Rose Holt, Vera Ziolowski, Regina Gersh, Francis Stanislawski, and Mary King; brothers, Dominic, John, Clement and Edward.
Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with a scripture service at 7:00 P.M.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October, 6, 2010, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Kenneth Stachnik serving as the celebrant.
Burial will take place at Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
In remembrance of Alice, memorials may be directed to the Carmelite Monastery. Envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home or church.
