MCCARTIN, Dr. Brian J. - Of Flint, age 64, died Friday, January 29, 2016 at McLaren-Flint.
Visitation will be held 4-8pm Tuesday, February 2, 2016 and 4-8pm Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint.
Cremation will take place following the visitation.
Brian was born in Providence, Rhode Island to James and Dorothy (Kelly) McCartin. After graduating from Central High School he attended the University of Rhode Island where he received his B.S. and M.S. in Applied Mathematics. He later attended the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University where he received a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics. He was also awarded a B.M. in Music Theory (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Hartford, Hartt School of Music. He enjoyed playing the piano, especially Bach.
Brian previously worked in Industry at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft and United Technologies Research Center. However, Brian’s true passion was teaching and he had more than 40 years of teaching experience, most recently at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan, where he taught Mathematics for 22 years. He retired in September 2015 as Professor Emeritus of Applied Mathematics. He has written 75 Journal Articles, four books and given numerous proceedings at Mathematical Conferences. Brian was most proud of being awarded the prestigious Chauvenet Prize for Mathematical Exposition by the Mathematical Association of America in 2010. This was for his paper e: the Master of All, which was published in the Mathematical Intelligencer. This paper was subsequently translated to Chinese.
He is survived by wife, Barbara Rowe McCartin.
Brian was a caring brother to his siblings Michael (Darlene) McCartin, Patrick (Patricia) McCartin, Kevin (Janell) McCartin, Kathleen (Mark) Hardiman, Mary Joan (John) Flaxington, James McCartin and Maureen Duffy, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and brother, Dennis McCartin.
