Carroll, Richard (Fred) Frederick, age 82 passed away Monday, November 25, 2013 at McLaren-Flint. Richard was born in Flint, MI on June 5, 1931.
Richard was the only child of George and Helen (Warner) Carroll of Flint, MI. He attended St. Matthew’s School and graduated from Flint Northern. After graduating, he pursued his passion for baseball. He played for the Sooner State League in Oklahoma, the Kitty League in Tennesee and was signed by The New York Giants Farm Club. He served in the United States Air Force and was a graduate of the University of Michigan.
Richard retired from the Flint Area Community Schools. He taught and coached numerous football and baseball teams at McKinley Jr. High and Flint Central High School. He spent his summers working as a supervisor for the Flint Baseball Commission until 1987. He played class A Baseball in the Flint City league. He was instrumental in building the Flint youth baseball program
He married his high school sweetheart, Agnes (Ruhala) Carroll on November 15, 1952 at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Flint. They celebrated 61 years of marriage . He is survived by his 9 children, Michael and wife Maria of Sacramento, CA, Maureen Carroll of Swartz Creek, MI, Matthew and Lisa Carroll of Colleyville, TX, Mark and Dawn Carroll of Clarkston, MI, Mitchell and Shelley Carroll of Burton, MI, Colleen Carroll of Grand Blanc, MI , Kathleen (Carroll) and Joel Tenney of Marietta, GA, Kelly (Carroll) and Bill Jensen of Midland, MI and Karen (Carroll) and Mike Somers of Midland, MI
He leaves his beloved grandchildren Curran and Taryn Lynch, Laura and Daniel Dodd, Meaghan and Luke Miller, Erin Lynch, Katy, Haley, Justin, Kristie, Tyler, Max and Emily Carroll, Sean and Andrea Tenney, Jacob, Taylor and Ellie Jensen, Nick, Matt, Jack and Jenna Somers. Beloved sister and brother in law Bob and Betsy Malenich, Aunt Helen Wolf and many nieces, nephews, dear friends and neighbors.
Visitation for Richard is Wednesday, November 27, 2013 from 12:00-3PM and 5:00PM-9:00PM at Sharp Funeral Home, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Rosary at 7:00PM
Visitation will proceed (9:00AM) the Funeral Mass which will be celebrated at 10:00 on Friday, November 29, 2013 at St. Pius X Catholic Church G-3139 Hogarth Ave. Flint . Interment at New Calvary Cemetery. Fr. Robert Copeland officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Flint YMCA or Catholic Retired Service Funds, Diocese of Lansing.
