Richard W. Stratman - age 52, of Holly, MI died suddenly Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at home. He was born November 18, 1967 to Diane (Groeneveld) and DuWayne Stratman. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 8 years, Ann (Vingco); son, Jesse (Courtney) Stratman; daughter, Yona Stratman; and mother, Diane. The middle of 3, he is survived by his sister, Vickie (Rennie) Sawade and brother, Mark Stratman; nieces & nephews: Allison Stratman, Courtney Stratman, Mark Stratman II, Alaric Sawade, Darien Sawade, Katie Stratman; great-nieces & nephews: Raelyn, Cade and Layla; and many extended family and close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, DuWayne. Richard was a hard worker who excelled at several different careers. After graduating Lake Fenton High School in 1987, he graduated from State Technical Institute in 1990 with state certifications for auto mechanic. In the late 90's, he joined the U. S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged due to an injury at boot camp. In 1997 & 1998, he completed Fire Fighter Training and served as an on-call Fenton Township Fire Fighter. He also worked as an auto mechanic at many locations before joining the U. S. Navy in 2000. He was deployed to the Middle East aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) during Operation Enduring Freedom and also aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) during Operation Iraqi Freedom, supporting the VAQ-141 Shadowhawks squadron EA-6B Prowler aircraft. He served in the Navy until 2005 supporting the Global War on Terrorism and then transitioned to the U. S. Army the same year. During his 11 years of Army service, he supported the CH-47 Chinook Helicopters in various battalions and was stationed in Korea, Honduras, Alabama, Korea (2nd tour), and Hawaii, as well as deployed to Afghanistan. He retired as a Staff Sergeant in 2016. Richard and Ann met during his second deployment to Korea and were married in Honolulu in 2011. They resided in Honolulu, Hawaii until they moved to Holly, MI. They enjoyed traveling, working on their house and farm, and raising their daughter Yona along with several dozen Red Jungle Fowl.
Visitation will be held Tuesday January 21st from 2-8 p.m. for family and friends at Brown Funeral Home 1480 Hill Rd, Grand Blanc Twp, MI 48439. A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday January 22nd at 12pm (noon) at Brown Funeral Home 1480 Hill Rd, Grand Blanc Twp, MI 48439. Short military honors service for those that would like to attend will be held at 2pm at Great Lakes National Cemetery 4200 Belford Rd, Holly, MI 48442.
Gathering of family & friends will be held at 3pm at VFW Post 3243 1148 North Leroy St., Fenton, MI 48430 In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Disabled American Veterans or The Gary Sinise Foundation in Richard's memory.
